Huang Junbi (1898-1991) was a renowned modern Chinese painter, known for his ink-and-wash landscapes, whose style blended traditional brushwork with Western light and shadow techniques. His works, grand and profound, exerted a significant influence on the development of modern Chinese painting. Along with Pu Xinyue and Zhang Daqian, Huang Junbi is known as one of the "Three Masters of the Crossing Sea."

The painting came from the estate of Zhang Yulin, the inscribed "Mr. Daorong," and was acquired from an auction house in the United States.
Zhang Yulin (1899-1975), courtesy name Daorong, was a native of Yixing, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from Jiangsu Law School and served as secretary-general of the Henan Provincial Committee of the Kuomintang and a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Government. He moved to Taiwan in 1949 and later settled in California in the United States. [Note 1]
Zhang Yulin's son, Mr. Zhang Zhengquan, is a famous overseas Chinese leader in California, President of the US-China Friendship Association, and Vice President of the World Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations. [Note 2]
